2016 in Review

It’s that time of year again when we all become very reflective and plan out how we want our lives to change with the new year. I actually really love thinking about  what I want to do to improve things for myself – it helps me get focused on the things that should matter. Therefore, today I thought I’d share with you my 2017 goals & resolutions.

2016 was a mixed bag for me – both good and bad things happened. I started off the year in a very snowy Montréal and spent my 2nd semester abroad there. I went on the most incredible trip of my life with Contiki to Vancouver, Whistler & the Rockies which is one of the scariest but best things I’ve ever done in my life.

One thing that wasn’t so great about that trip was the ski accident I had on the 2nd last day, resulting in a serious knee injury and some complications for the rest of the year. I got surgery back in August, which I’m not gonna lie was quite a difficult time. But after lots of physiotherapy I am now walking normally and working on my fitness and strength in my knee so that I can get back to the ski slopes at some point in the future.

After my return to the UK I was reunited with my boyfriend after a long 5 months and we decided to move in together. We found a lovely little flat and have been in it for 7 months now (OMG I can’t believe it’s been that long!). Despite many little arguments over how to decorate it, we got there in the end and I can’t imagine living with anyone else!

So that basically brings me up to now. I’m in my final year at uni, in the midst of my masters dissertation and working on making my blog as good as it can be at the same time! I’m really busy but I’m also really happy, so I can say that all in all 2016 has been quite a success.

That was quite a ramble! Now onto what the post is actually about!

My Goals and Resolutions

2017 goals and resolutions

Fitness & Health

As I mentioned before, I had a bad ski accident and knee surgery earlier this year. As a result I put on a lot of weight and my level of fitness deteriorated. Therefore, in the New Year I’d like to focus on getting back to the activities that I was doing before like spin classes, weight lifting and yoga. I’d like to eat a bit better too, but I’m going to avoid that ‘diet’ mindset for the New Year because it just makes me feel miserable!

Frugality

So, if you couldn’t already tell from this blog, I like to buy things. I am a shopaholic. However, I really want to change this habit. Max and I want to start saving to buy a property and also after uni I’m not really sure what I’m doing so I need to have a bit of security. So I’m calling the new year frugal 2017.

Productivity

This was one of my resolutions last year and I did actually get somewhere with it. It took some time, but this year I’ve been waking up earlier and getting a lot more work done with both this blog and my uni work. However, I want to take this to the next level. I have a very busy, challenging year ahead of me with uni and I also want to keep this blog growing so I need to organise myself quite meticulously. I’m planning on early mornings in the library and evenings working on blogs/videos and not making excuses. 2017 is going to be the year of hustle!

Friendships

I have become much more immersed in the blogging community in 2016, so I’d really like to continue this into the New Year. I’d love to actually meet the lovely girls that I talk to on Twitter all the time and also reach out to other people within the community and get to know them better. I can be a bit shy and nervous when it comes to things like this, but I’m going to really motivate myself to reach out to people because I know it’ll be worth it in the end!

Technology Detox

Ok, this one is a bit cliché. But I’d like to cut back on my use of technology/social media in the New Year, at least for the hour before I go to bed. Max and I are so guilty of just coming home in the evenings and binge watching Netflix whilst looking at our phones intermittently. Therefore, I’d like to start cutting back on looking at a screen and doing more ‘real-life’ activities. Such as reading a book, reading French magazines to help with my uni work, knitting (my mum got me a little beginners kit for christmas!) and also just getting out a bit more and seeing people.

Goals for 2017

In terms of goals for 2017, I’d obviously like to graduate from my masters degree but I’d like to push myself to see if I can get a distinction but if not, a merit would be amazing. Also, I’d like to find a good job for after I graduate which is one of my biggest goals for next year!

In terms of blogging, I’d like to continue to grow this blog & my social media channels. I’m going to focus on YouTube and make much better quality content over there (you can subscribe to my channel here!). I’d like to hit maybe 1,000 subscribers on my channel and also push myself to see if I can hit 2,000 followers on Instagram this year. It’s gonna be hard with all this algorithm business, but I’ll try my hardest anyway!

For life related goals, I want to get back to my previous physical fitness before my ski accident. I’d also like to find some time to travel a little bit in the New Year (I currently have NO plans, for the first time ever!). Finally, my goal is just to be at least as happy as I was in 2016 but hopefully more.

Let me know your goals & resolutions in the comments! Happy New Year to all of you when it comes and thank you for reading my little blog this year.
